Filter coffee machines are the automated answer to ground coffee that is topped with water and produce a milder, fruitier taste than espresso.

Such devices have been popular in the USA and Scandinavia for many years. Now they are becoming more and more popular in the rest of Europe as well. Most similar to manual brewing methods such as pouring water, a filter coffee maker allows you to save time and simplify the brewing process.

How do filter coffee machines work?

Filter coffee machines are generally easy to use. They work by heating the water, which then permeates the ground coffee. Usually, the water moistens the coffee for a short period of time, known as the ‘bloom time’. This helps remove carbon dioxide from the coffee grounds and improves flavor. It can be adjusted on some filter coffee machines.

After that, the hot water passes through the coffee grounds before passing through the filter and entering the carafe. The speed at which the water passes through the coffee is called the flow rate and is adjustable on most coffee machines. The main difference between filter coffee and espresso is that in espresso the water passes through the coffee grounds under pressure (usually 12 bar pressure). Combined with a different ratio of coffee to water, produces a more concentrated drink than filter coffee.

Are filter coffee machines worth it?

The type of coffee maker you should buy depends entirely on your coffee habits. How do you and the people you live with like to enjoy your coffee? Do you want a quick caffeine boost before heading into a busy day at the office? Do you like taking the time to grind coffee, brew coffee and froth milk before making your own latte art as a barista? Do you need a pot of coffee next to you to drink during the day while working from home?

If you like the latter, it’s more than likely that a filter coffee maker will be worth it. Filter coffee machines usually fill a carafe of coffee. Espresso models pour coffee by the cup, which means they’re great if you’re looking for volume. They can also be a good option if you’re on a budget but still want coffee that can be drunk at home.
